Christina Herbert, a junior from Bridgewater College, was named the 2017 DIII Honda Athlete of the Year nominee for Golf as announced by Executive Director Chris Voelz of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) presented by Honda.

Herbert is now designated one of 11 finalists for the prestigious DIII Honda Woman Athlete of the Year. This will be voted on at the end of the academic year by national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of THE CWSA program, now in its 41st year.

“I am honored to be nominated for this award among so many exceptional athletes,” stated Herbert. “I have worked very hard these past few seasons but this season was a pleasant surprise. It has been very exciting to have success this year. Coming into this year, it was a goal of mine to win the National Championship and I think it pays to have lofty goals. I could not have done it without the support of my family, team, and coaches.”

Herbert, the 2017 Ping/Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) DIII Player of the Year and ODAC Player of the Year, captured the DIII National Championship by two strokes with a four-day total of 293 and led DIII in scoring average for the season (74.04). She won medalist honors in eight of 11 tournaments and carded a career-best round of 69 three times this season, including the second round of the NCAA Championship.

In addition to earning the NCAA individual title, she was the ODAC individual champion and is a two-time ODAC Player of the Year. The junior from Williamsburg, Va., is also a two-time WGCA first-team All-American and three-time first-team ODAC honoree. She helped lead Bridgewater to the ODAC team title and off the course was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

“​Christina's season has been almost unimaginable,” said head coach John Rogers. “To win eight of eleven tournaments she played, including the conference championship and then the national championship, that's Secretariat-type amazing. It's fun to watch because she goes about it all in a humble, understated way, like it's just another day in the office. I couldn't be happier for her to experience this success."

All Honda Sports nominees from DIII and DII become a finalist for the prestigious 2017 Honda Woman Athlete of the Year in their respective divisions, presented in a live telecast on CBS Sports on June 26, 2017, in downtown Los Angeles. The Honda Sports nominees are recognized in 11 DIII and DII NCAA-sanctioned sports; cross country, basketball, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball, and track & field.

THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for 41 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.   Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.1 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs at the institutions.
