Brigham Young University’s Mikayla Colohan, Jessie Fleming of UCLA, Emily Fox from the University of North Carolina and Stanford University’s Catarina Macario are the four finalists for the Class of 2020 Honda Sport Award for Soccer as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) today.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 44 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”. The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2020 Honda Cup which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 22, 2020, in downtown Los, Angeles.
The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the United Soccer Coaches Association. The Honda Sport award winner for soccer will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
Colohan, a junior midfielder from Fruit Heights, Utah, was a United Soccer Coaches first-team All-American and named the 2019 West Coast Conference Player of the Year. She is a two-time All-WCC first-team honoree and finished the season with 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points.
Fleming is a two-time Honda Sport Award finalist and is a two-time MAC Hermann Trophy finalist. The senior midfielder hails from London, Ontario, Canada, and is a two-time United Soccer Coaches first-team All-American. She is also a finalist for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award and is a Canadian National Team member who has played in two World Cups.
Fox, a junior defender from Ashland, Va., is a 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy finalist and was named a United Soccer Coaches first-team All-American. She led her team to the NCAA College Cup Championship game and an ACC regular and tournament title. She is a two-time first-team All-ACC honoree.
Macario is a two-time MAC Hermann Trophy finalist after winning the award in 2018. The junior forward led her team to the NCAA College Cup Championship title and is a three-time United Soccer Coaches first-team All-American. She is also a three-time Pac-12 Player of the Year having won for Midfielder in 2019, Forward in 2018 and Offensive and Freshman in 2017.
Honda Sport Award winners will be presented with the honor during on-campus presentations throughout the year and all Honda Sport Award winners become a finalist for the prestigious 2020 Honda Cup award presented in June.
The CWSA, celebrating its 44th year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.
