Anna Cockrell of USC Named Honda Sport Award Winner for Track & Field

Anna Cockrell, a redshirt senior sprinter/hurdles from USC, was named the Honda Sport Award winner for Track & Field as announced today by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA).

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 45 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”.  The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2021 Honda Cup, which will be presented on a telecast on CBS Sports Network on June 28th at 9 pm ET.

Cockrell was chosen by a vote of administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Finalists included Tara Davis (Texas), Tyra Gittens (Texas A&M) and Athing Mu (Texas A&M).

“I am so humbled, honored and excited to receive this prestigious award,” said Cockrell.  “This last week has felt like one dream come true after another.  To be included in this year’s class and amongst past winners is awe-inspiring.  I owe so much gratitude to my family, coaches, and the entire track and field staff at USC for always supporting me and making these dreams possible.”Cockrell, hailing from Charlotte, N.C., was the 2021 National Champion in Outdoor 100m and 400m Hurdles and was just the second person ever to win the 100m and 400m Hurdles in the same season. She broke her own 400m Hurdles school record and led USC to the 2021 National Championship team title.

A three-time Pac-12 400m Hurdle Champion and the 2021 100m Hurdle champion, she ranks third on USC’s 100m Hurdles list. She completes her campaign as a seven-time All-American and was named to the Bowerman Watch List..

Off the track, she was recently named the Pac-12 Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year and is a CoSIDA All-America first-team honoree as well as a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic member.

The CWSA, celebrating its 45th anniversary year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs.
