Finalists for the Class of 2023 Honda Sport Award for Gymnastics Announced

Haleigh Bryant from Louisiana State University, Oregon State’s Jade Carey, Trinity Thomas of the University of Florida and Raena Worley from the University of Kentucky are the four finalists for the Class of 2023 Honda Sport Award for Gymnastics as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) today. 

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 47 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”.  The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2023 Honda Cup which will be presented during the live telecast of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presented by Honda in downtown L.A., on Monday, June 26, at 9 pm ET/6 PT on CBS Sports Network.

The gymnastics finalists were selected by a panel of experts and coaches from the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA). The Honda Sport award winner for gymnastics will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.  

Bryant, a junior from Cornelius, N.C., is a 17-time All-American, including nine this season which is the most in a single season by an LSU gymnast. Overall, she has 60 career titles ranking tenth in school history and owns 30 titles from the 2023 season.

Carey is a two-time Honda Award finalist after earning the honors in her rookie season. The sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz., is a two-time Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year and is a 14-time All-American. She posted a runner-up finish on beam at the 2023 NCAA Championship for the program’s highest finish.

Thomas was the Class of 2022 Honda Award winner for Gymnastics and was a Top Three honoree. She is the NCAA career 10.0 co-leader after tying the mark at the NCAA Championship. A graduate student from York, Pa., Thomas has earned 28 First Team All-America honors in her career.

Worley, a senior from Christiansburg, Va., is a 2023 AAI Award finalist which is given to the most outstanding senior female gymnast. She boasts eight career All-America honors, including five from the 2023 season and has earned All-SEC honors in all four seasons of her career.

The CWSA, entering its 47th year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs.
