Amy Griffin, a junior midfielder from Middlebury College, was named the DIII Honda Athlete of the Year finalist for Field Hockey as announced today by Executive Director Chris Voelz of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) presented by Honda.

Griffin is designated one of 11 finalists for the prestigious DIII Honda Athlete of the Year. This will be voted on at the end of the academic year by national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of THE CWSA program, now in its 48th year.

I am honored to be named as a finalist for this award,” said Grifin. “I want to thank my coaches, teammates, trainer, friends, and family for getting me to this point. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such a uniquely special and historic program and to be surrounded by teammates like mine every day. I’m grateful for the opportunities and support that Middlebury and the athletic department have provided.”

Griffin, hailing from Wilmette, Ill., led her team to its sixth straight NCAA DIII Field Hockey Championship title, eighth overall, and was named the NFHCA National Player of the Year. She is a two-time NFHCA First Team All-American honoree and earned NFCHA Regional Player of the Year accolades.

The midfielder was named the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year and is a two-time First Team All-NESCAC team member.

This fall, Griffin started all 22 games and recorded at least one point in 18 contests, registering two or more points in 15 games. She paced the NESCAC and was fifth in the nation in points (56) and goals (23) during the campaign and added 10 assists, which was fourth in the league. She tallied seven multi-goal games this year and scored four game-winning markers, including the deciding tallies in the NCAA Semifinal victory over Babson and the NCAA Second Round triumph over William Smith.

Overall, she currently sits fourth in the Middlebury record books with 35 career assists.

“The Middlebury field hockey team and coaching staff are so honored to have Amy recognized as the Division III Honda Award Finalist for field hockey,” said head coach Katharine DeLorenzo. “Amy is a stalwart defender and an elite scorer. She unpacks every aspect of her play and ours; she is a growth mindset at its best.  Even more importantly, Amy creates a rhythm that becomes the steady heartbeat of our game and our team on and off the field.”

All Honda Sport Award finalists from DIII and DII will vie for the prestigious 2024 Honda Athlete of the Year in their respective divisions, presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 7 PM ET, from its new home in New York City.

The Honda Award finalists are recognized in 11 DIII and DII NCAA-sanctioned sports; cross country, basketball, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball, and track & field.

The CWSA, entering its 48th year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs.
