Bio
The inaugural winner of what was then known as the Broderick Cup in the 1976-77 season is Delta State’s Lusia “Lucy” Harris. Competing just a few years after the passage of Title IX, and before the NCAA governed women’s athletics, Lucy helped shape the future of women’s basketball. Under the leadership of the legendary coach Margaret Wade, she dominated the low post and led Delta State University to three consecutive AIAW national championships. Lucy also represented the United States on the first-ever Olympic Women’s Basketball Team, earning a silver medal at the 1976 Montreal Games and scoring the first basket in women’s Olympic history. Her groundbreaking career included being drafted by the NBA’s New Orleans Jazz, a rare and historic honor, though she chose to pursue opportunities off the court.
