Bio

The 1980 winner of what was then the Broderick Cup was NC State’s Julie Shea, the first Track & Field athlete to earn the nation’s top collegiate honor. Julie led the Wolfpack to back-to-back AIAW Cross Country national team titles in 1979 and 1980, while also claiming two individual cross country crowns and five track and field national championships during her career. She was the only female ever to win the ACC’s Anthony J. McKevlin Award as overall Athlete of the Year before a women’s award was created in 1990. Julie later placed third in the New York City Marathon and fourth in Boston, and eventually carried her passion for running into public service as a three-time Raleigh City Council member.
