On February 1, 2018, Victoria M. “Vicky” Chun was named Director of Athletics at Yale University and will begin her tenure on July 1, 2018. She is a nationally respected leader in college athletics and has had a long and storied tenure at Colgate University having led the athletic department since 2012. Prior to that she served as a senior member of the Colgate athletic department from 2005-2012 and as the Head Volleyball Coach for three seasons. Additionally, as a student-athlete, she was a highly decorated and two-time captain of the Colgate Volleyball team.

As an AD, Chun was recognized in 2014 by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal as a “Game Changer,” she has earned a stellar reputation among students, faculty, administrators, parents, alumni and peers as one of the most enthusiastic, involved and well-respected administrators in NCAA Division I athletics. In the six years of Chun’s tenure as AD, the Colgate athletics department oversaw dramatic infrastructure improvements, completed construction of major capital projects, achieved record breaking fundraising, hired high-profile head coaches, and was nationally recognized for academic and athletic excellence. And the positive energy and enthusiasm that now permeates the Colgate athletic program has been widely recognized as a by-product of Chun’s brand of leadership.

Chun is one of 40 members serving on the NCAA Division I Council and she was elected as the Vice Chair for the Division I Football Oversight Committee. Chun also was appointed to the newly created Division I Football Competition Committee. In 2015, she was elected to serve a three-year term as Board President of Women Leaders in College Sports (formerly known as NACWAA). Chun also served on Harvard University’s Board of Overseers and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation Board. In March of 2018, Chun was named as an Under Armour AD of the Year Award (ADOY) recipient for 2071-18 and will receive her award at the NACDA annual convention in late June.

Chun earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate in 1991 (double major: Political Science and Education) and Master of Arts degree in 1994 (History). As an undergraduate, Chun was a four-year letter winner and two-year captain on the Raider volleyball team. She helped the Raiders win the inaugural Patriot League championship in 1990 and was named to the All-Patriot League Team in the league’s first two years of existence. Chun is a member of the Patriot League’s All-Decade Team for the 1990s. In August 2015, Chun was named to the Patriot League’s 25th Anniversary Volleyball Team.

Chun completed the unique double of being named Patriot League Player of the Year (1991) and Coach of the Year (1996). She served as head coach from 1994-97, posting a 67-27 record and guiding her squad to two conference championships and Colgate’s first-ever NCAA tournament berth. Chun is believed to be the only person in NCAA Division I history to earn both player and coach of the year in the same conference in addition to winning conference championships in those two roles.

In June 2011, Chun received the prestigious Maroon Citation, established in 1955 in recognition of significant and invaluable personal contributions to Colgate. A record of service, rather than a single act or achievement, is the criteria for selection. In 2010, Chun was selected as the National Administrator of the Year (FCS Division) by NACWAA (now known as Women Leaders in College Sports). In 1999, Chun was inducted into the Colgate Hall of Honor just three years after receiving the Howard Hartman Award, given to the Colgate Coach of the Year.

Prior to her AD appointment at Colgate, Chun was named the Senior Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator in October 2008, after serving as Associate Director of Athletics beginning in July 2007, Assistant Director of Athletics in 2006 and Interim Assistant Director of Athletics in 2005. Before a career in athletic administration, Chun served as Colgate’s Head Volleyball Coach from 1994-96 and as Assistant Volleyball Coach in 1993.

Chun’s experience also includes serving as the Assistant Volleyball Coach at Cornell University, Technical Assistant Coach for the USA Women’s Volleyball Team, as well as an Administrative Intern at the NCAA national office (1997-2000) and Commissioner of the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (2001-05).

Chun has been featured in the NCAA’s Champions magazine, The Huffington Post, and is a frequent contributor to numerous sports publications around the country. She speaks regularly on topics including leadership in sport, organizational dynamics, diversity and inclusion, and teamwork. In 2010, Chun successfully completed the NCAA Fellows Program; in 2011, she graduated from the NACWAA (now known as Women Leaders in College Sports) Executive Institute.

Chun was born Jan. 1, 1969, in Santa Monica, Calif., to remarkable parents. Her mother, Susan Chan Chun, set a national record when she swam across Hong Kong Harbor at the young age of 13. Her father, Victor Chun, played varsity soccer at Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute and is the author of “American PT Boats of World War II, Volume I” and “American PT Boats of World War II, Volume II.” In her spare time, Chun can be found playing the role of proud and doting aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
