Honda Cup Finalists to Participate in “Huddle” with EnrichLA Community Service Project In L.A.

THE Collegiate Women Sports Award Presented by Honda (CWSA) and EnrichLA announced today that the Class of 2014 will “Huddle” with students from El Serreno Middle School (6-8th grades) in an informal panel discussion led by Summer Sanders (Olympic Gold Medalist and past Honda Sports Award winner) and Deitre Collins-Parker (past Honda-Broderick Cup Winner and U.S. Olympian) on Monday, June 30, from 8:00 am to 9:15 am PST.

The Class of 2014 will share their experiences with the kids in sports, academics, and their own acts of service. Students will enjoy an autograph session with the Honorees following the Huddle where each will receive a commemorative poster of the Class of 2014.

The Huddle is one of many events surrounding the Collegiate Women Sports Award presented by Honda's announcement of the Honda Cup which airs live on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 30, at 5 pm PST/8 pm EST, from the USC Galen Center Founders Room in Los Angeles, Calif.

The Huddle will take place at the Old Schoolhouse on N. Eastern Ave., Los Angeles, Calif., in conjunction with EnrichLA, a community wellness non-profit organization that builds edible gardens in local schools. EnrichLA focuses on low-income and underserved neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Over the last three years, EnrichLA has installed gardens of all types in schools throughout Los Angeles County, from the West Side of Los Angeles, to the San Gabriel Valley. These school gardens range from one-acre wildlands habitats and farms, to reading gardens, or small edible raised beds. To date, they have built over 60 school gardens.

Student-athletes in attendance include Robin Anderson (Tennis) and Abby Dahlkemper (Soccer) from UCLA, Krista Vansant (Volleyball) from University of Washington and hailing from Redlands, Calif., Lauren Battista (Bentley, Div. II Athlete of the Year), MarieElena Bolles (UConn, Field Hockey), Christy Cazzola (UW-Oshkosh, Div. III Athlete of the Year), Abbey D'Agostino (Dartmouth, Cross Country), Arin Gilliland (Kentucky, Inspiration Award), Kim Jacob (Alabama, Gymnastics), Felicia Lee (Stanford, Swimming & Diving), Sharika Nelvis (Track & Field, Arkansas State) and Madison Shipman (Tennessee, Softball).

THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation’s top NCAA women student-athletes for 37 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $2.8 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs at the institutions. Previous Honda Cup winners include Brittney Griner, Ann Meyers Drysdale, Lisa Fernandez, Misty May-Treanor, Maya Moore, and Candace Parker.
