Finalists for the Class of 2023 Honda Sport Award for Lacrosse Announced

Northwestern University’s Izzy Scane, Delaney Sweitzer from Syracuse University, Sam Thacker of the University of Denver and Loyola University’s Jillian Wilson are the four finalists for the Class of 2023 Honda Sport Award for Lacrosse as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) today. 

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 47 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”.  The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2023 Honda Cup which will be presented during the live telecast of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presented by Honda on CBS Sports Network on June 26, at 8:30 ET/5:30 PT, in Los Angeles.

The lacrosse finalists were selected by a panel of coaches and experts from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Honda Sport award winner for lacrosse will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote. 

Scane was recently named the Tewaaraton Award Winner given to the top women’s lacrosse player in the nation and was tabbed the IWLCA Player of the Year and Attacker of the Year. The attack player, hailing from Clarkston, Mich., led her team to its eighth National Championship and led the nation in scoring with 99 goals.

Sweitzer, a senior from Hatfield, Pa., was named the IWLCA Goalkeeper of the Year and the 2023 ACC Goalkeeper of the Year. Her 185 saves this season rank seventh nationally and are fourth on the single-season school record list. She posted double-figure saves in eight games and led the ACC in three categories.

Thacker is a senior from Lutherville, Md., and was the IWLCA Defensive Player of the Year and the repeated as the Big East Defensive Player of the Year. She had 53 caused turnovers on the season which ranked third nationally and is third-most in single season program history. She ranks second all-time in program history with 164 caused turnovers.

Wilson, a graduate student hailing from Hampstead, Md., was named the IWLCA Midfielder of the Year and earned Patriot League Midfielder of the Year honors for the second straight season. She led the nation in draw controls this season with 198 setting a new school single season mark and holds the all-time school record with 449 career draw controls.

The CWSA, entering its 47th year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs.
